I shed a tear for you today,

I shot you with my gun,

I warned you with muffled screams,

I told you that you should run.

.

I hold your fragile body,

I cradle your limped frame,

I wipe the blood from my lips,

I told you it wasn't a game.

.

I tell you to rest in peace my beauty,

I close your frozen eyelids,

I say you’re in a better place,

I remind you of our kids.

.

I remember the better times we had,

I forget the tempest just past,

I want to cherish the good in you,

I regret this feeling at last.

.

I will bury you by the willow tree,

I know this was your favorite place,

I think that you will like it there,

I hope it’s what your spirit will embrace.

.

I will honor you in our memories,

I will say a pray for you,

I will visit with our children,

I think it’s the least that I can do.

.

I clean the blood from my hands,

I believe you were the best around,

I know your body gave up the fight,

I love you my best friend, my hound.

This poem is for anyone who has lost a pet, or more specifically a pet dog. It's quite a sad moment in your life when you have to have your dog put down due to illness or old age. But these moments make you stronger and you have the memories of your loved pet to keep with you forever.

Some of my other hubs that you might enjoy...

Thanks ShaunMasterton, that was my intension to intrigue the reader, "Am I talking about a human?" then I give the answer in the final line of the poem. I even tried not to give it away with the main hub picture. Glad you enjoyed it.

very moving and beautiful.. I , too thought at first you were talking about murdering a person and was a bit shocked... beautiful twist... it is so very difficult to lose a pet and to have to make the decision to end their suffering...powerful piece

Thank you invictus, losing a pet to old age is very hard, you only hope that their suffering has ended and they go to a better place.

I like the way the poem let you infer one thing and didn't explain the subject until the end. I actually thought that you were talking about a man shooting his wife until the last line. It bent my emotions one way and then another. Very good stuff.

After a long search I found a poet who can tell a story while rhyming. Although it was the description of a sad phase, I enjoyed the flow and rhyming.

Going to read your other poems, now.

One more thing, I enjoyed the suspense you maintained in the poem. Till the end I was guessing about the entire situation and was thinking of murdering of a loved one, although I couldn't come close to a pet. :P

Wow, thanks for your kind comments Bhawna Sharma. I enjoy writing poems that rhyme, I think it is part of the fun of trying to make them flow and rhyme.

In true life, I did not shoot my dog, but I know people do this (due to living in remote communities and not having access to vets etc). We did have to have our old dog put down by a vet (euthanized by injection) however and this was done at home. It was a very sad day.

just knew you were not cruel enough to shoot someone, but you had me worried

Thanks poetlorraine, yeah I couldn't shoot anyone or any pet, but we had to have our old fella put down which was hard enough.

Some poetry is rubbish

Not even worth a dime

But yours has lovely rhythm

In tandem with the rhyme

Yes you got me too, hook line and sinker and being the proud owner of six, yes 'six' dogs, i loved this poem so much that i'm going to read it a few times to let it wash over me. Thanks
